This leads onto our spacious ‘breakout area’ outside our classroom, where we can carry out all our art and craft activities.

Our classroom is bright and spacious. Such a pleasant environment to learn in. Miss Paterson has a teaching wall where our Smartboard is mounted along with a very fancy sliding whiteboard that reveals lots of super storage space!

We have just begun our new ‘secret topic’ and have already come up with many fantastic ideas of how to transform our classroom, however you will have to wait until our open evening to find out about it!

Primary 6 have recently had some workshops with Childline and we have learned how to keep ourselves safe in school and at home. Both sessions from Ritchie were very informative.

We are looking forward to a busy term with our topic. Enjoy our photographs of the new school… but it’s only a sneak preview until the open evening.

Primary 6 and Miss Paterson

Christmas is coming!

To start off Term 2 we decided to make some fabulous Solar System mobiles in our co-operative learning groups. Primary 6 worked hard to gather donations, shoeboxes and wrapping paper. We then split into teams to sort, wrap, pack, label and check all the boxes. All of the parents, pupils and staff's kind donations will be sent to Eastern European countries to children who are less fortunate than many of us. Primary 6 really hope that we can put a smile on some children's faces this Christmas. Once again Primary 6 and Miss Paterson send our thanks to all that donated.

Our Christmas Fayre was a success at the end of November and our Glam Tissue Boxes went down a treat. We helped raise some funds for the school which was great.

December has been a very busy month for Primary 6, as we had our St Andrew's Assembly and on that same day our St Andrew's Day Celebrations along with P6 pupils from Mrs Irving's class. Both events were a success and Primary 6 truly deserve credit for their hard work and preparations for the day. We had a slight technical hitch with music at our Ceilidh, however that did not stop us as we ploughed on through and entertained our parents and special guests. Miss Paterson is very proud of us and commented on how professional we all were about it. The Ceilidh raised money for the school funds and our Assembly raised money for our chosen charity: The Rainbow Trust.

We are very excited this week as we are really getting into the Christmas spirit with the Concerts, Panto and Christmas Parties coming up. We love wearing our pedometers and all try to take part in more physical activity in order to up our steps and stay on top of Kirklandneuk’s leader board.

We have come to the end of our swimming block sadly. However we’ve had such great fun at the Victory Baths with our instructors. On the last day we got to wear our pyjamas and learned some survival techniques. We will soon be awarded our Swimming certificates and badges.

Primary 6 have been receiving some football training from pupils visiting from Renfrew High, and have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges they have set. Some pupils were also selected to take part in a tournament at the high school last week. Let’s just say with all this weather we’ve been having; we got a little bit wet! Nevertheless, we had a great afternoon.

For our R.M.E. topic we have been learning about ‘Christianity in the Churches’. Mr Hawthorne very kindly came to our class with a fabulous presentation and activities to help us learn more about the topic. After the October holiday we will be visiting Trinity Parish Church to visit Rev. Steele and gain more knowledge about the topic.

Mrs Hutchison comes to our class on a Thursday afternoon to teach us some great music activities to help gain more knowledge of notes, beat, pitch and rhythm. We have such a great time joining in and moving around the class.

On Tuesday afternoons Miss Fulton teaches us French. At the moment we are learning how to discuss the weather in French. We really enjoy learning a new language as it’s a valuable skill to have.
We have also prepared and presented our solo talks to the class. Miss Paterson was very impressed with her confident pupils. We have done so much in term 1 so here are some photographs for you to browse. :)

<img style="WIDTH: 200px; We also have a new teacher; Miss Paterson who is very impressed with our high standards of work in the class so far.

During the first week of term, we each made a fact sheet about ourselves to be put in a Time Capsule, which will be opened at the end of Primary 6. We hope to be able to compare our likes and dislikes and also see if we have achieved the targets we set for the year. We also put a current photograph of ourselves on our fact sheets and cannot wait to see how much we change throughout the year.

Our class points system is ‘Around the World’. We try our best to work in teams to collect flags from all around the world. To fit in with this theme we named our co-operative learning teams after countries or famous landmarks. Our teams are: United Arab Emirates, Alaska, Hawaii, London Eye, Emirates Palace and Russia. We think this is a great way to earn group points and we learn about countries and their flags too! Miss Paterson also has some special badges we can wear if we have shown we are Successful Learners, Responsible Citizens, Effective Contributors or Confident Individuals in class or around the school. These are called VIP badges (Very Important Pupil).

We have started an exciting new Science topic, learning all about The Solar System. Some of us have brought in interesting books to share with the class. We enjoy working in our co-operative teams to learn about our topics. In our teams we have made fact sheets on each planet. Here are a few examples. Don’t they look fabulous?

We have also been very artistic and created some textured planet paintings. They still need some finishing touches before going on the wall but already look great!

In Term 1 we are visiting Renfrew Victory Baths each Wednesday morning. We love swimming and everyone is trying very hard to impress the swimming teachers to progress to the next group.

In Primary 6 our responsibilities are growing at Kirklandneuk. We now do Dinner Duty at lunch times, Playmakers and we have chosen our representatives for the Eco-Committee, Pupil Council and Forum and our Anti-Bullying representatives.

We all look forward to what the rest of term 1 holds for us. One of our highlights has been when Paisley Arts Theatre Company worked with us on an anti-bullying presentation called "Being Me." We spent the morning rehearsing with two ladies from P.A.C.E on songs and drama performances. We then performed for Primaries 3-7 in the gym hall. Miss Hyde said we were all fantastic and had made her very proud. We didn't have very long to rehearse our songs so we think we did an amazing job!

We are currently learning about our new topic which is Brazil. We have been learning about the Amazon Rainforest and all the species and people living in the rainforest. We have also learned about how to protect the rainforest and why is it important to do so. Miss Bremner has been leading our topic and the next area we are going to learn about is the carnival. Brazil is an extremely diverse country with the warmest and wettest areas in the world. It is so interesting.

We are looking forward to continuing with out topic and are excited about all the other exciting things we have coming up in June!!

Our fantastic Open Night

On Tuesday 22nd March Primary 6 presented their amazing "Journey Through the Human Body" integrated topic to all our parents. We had been working on it since the end of January and had a mix of 3D models, pictures, facts and activities. We worked so hard on our topic and hope you enjoyed our Open Evening! We loved our topic and thought it was amazing.

In March we also had the chance to visit the Burns' Heritage Centre in Alloway. We had a super day visiting all the sights around Robert Burns' hometown. We visited a museum where we learned about the life of Robert Burns and saw some amazing things like a lock of his hair!! We were then given a tour of the Burns' Monument, Alloway Kirk and Brig O Doon. In the afternoon we took part in a workshop at the Burns' Cottage. We got to dress up in traditional clothing from this era, it was so much fun! Even though it was a very snowy day in Alloway, it didn't dampen our spirits, we had an amazing time.

Primary 6 are looking forward to the Easter break and hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday.

The New Year

Primary 6 have had an extremely busy start to the new term. For the first two weeks in January we were rehearsing for our Burns’s Assembly and Ceilidh. This took place on Friday 21st January and was a huge success.
At our assembly we spoke about the life and times of Robert Burns, recited some of his most famous poems including “Tae a Moose” and sang Scottish songs including “Flower of Scotland.” We thoroughly enjoyed performing at the assembly and raised a significant amount of money for our chosen charity “Yorkhill Hospital.” Thank you to everyone who contributed.

At night we hosted a Burns’s Supper/Ceilidh in our very own school dinner hall. We performed poems, sang songs and highland dancers performed for all the parents and invited guests. The most enjoyable part of the evening was dancing the night away with some traditional Scottish Ceilidh dancing. It was so much fun!

Currently, we are learning about our new secret topic. We are really enjoying working in groups and are looking forward to transforming our classroom for our open evening in March. We hope you can attend to see all our hard work.

Christmas concert

We hope you managed to attend one of our Christmas concert performances last week. Primary 6 and every other class worked extremely hard to make sure we put on an amazing performance for the concert. Every class did a wonderful job considering we had been absent from school for nearly a week because of the weather.

Primary 6 sang the Wizzard classic "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday." We had singing, dancing and inflatable guitars!!! We hope everyone enjoyed our performance as much as we did.
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v24.nonxt3.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D83c899e81b8cc145%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330329612%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D2A728D101484311CDA954F97FC9A4D38230C0B6F.72120F2FCD4EE4C021B5A0A3448AAB2AF6E6C681%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D83c899e81b8cc145%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DZD_5RQpudl6Pyqh7T4jNN8A6JF4&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Primary 6 are so excited about Christmas coming and have enjoyed all the fun activities we have been doing in class. We are currently rehearsing for the upcoming Christmas concerts. Our class will be singing the Christmas classic "I Wish it Could be Christmas Everyday." We hope you can make one of the concerts to see us and all the other classes performing.

We really enjoyed making our Christmas tree pinecones for the Christmas Fayre. Our crafts helped to raise lots of money and the Fayre was a huge success.

Primary 6 were very lucky to get the chance to visit the Albert Hall on Tuesday 23rd November for "Bubblegum and Fluff." This was an exciting event where we learned all about Christmas in a variety of ways. We took part in a "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" style quiz, made Christmas tiles, learned about the true meaning of giving presents at Christmas time and made our very own Christmas wish. We would like to say thank you to Brian and all the helpers at the Albert Hall for making our day so enjoyable and for making us feel very welcome.

Primary 6 wishes everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!!!!

Term 2 in Primary 6

We have had a busy start to Term 2 in our new school building. We have really settled into our new building and are enjoying having more space in our classroom and having an amazing new smartboard.

On the first week back we created fantastic castle pictures in art and created new cooperative learning groups. Our new groups are called: The Hip Hop Sponges, Dynomite, Pop-tastic, Pop to the Top and The Pop Pizzas.

This week we had Parent's Night and we were extremely pleased with our excellent reports. We are going to keep up the good work for the rest of the year. On Wednesday we had our last week of swimming. It was a great afternoon where we got to wear our pyjamas in the pool!! We are really going to miss swimming and we feel like we have learned a lot from the swimming coaches who have taught us every week.

We have got lots of exciting things to look forward to this term. We have a brand new topic "Significant Scots" where we will be learning about important Scottish people from past and present. We will also be starting rehearsals for our Robert Burns assembly and ceilidh which will take place on Friday 21st January.

Primary 6 are really excited about Christmas. We have a new teacher called Miss Hyde and have made new friends with children who have joined our class from Moorpark Primary School.
We have been taking more of a responsibility for our learning and around the school as a whole. Some of the ways we have been doing this are through Dinner Duty, Playmakers scheme and becoming Litter Pickers. We love taking an active role in the school.
In class we have been taking part in lots of group challenges called Cooperative Learning. We are in groups of 4 and each have a role and responsibility in our groups. We have been working in our groups during R.M.E and Science which has been lots of fun. We enjoy working as part of a team and helping each other during group challenges.
We have just finished learning about the Solar System in Science. We worked in groups to create and present posters on different planets and learned about gravity during different experiments. We now know the order of the planets from the Sun. They are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto (dwarf planet).
We have been very lucky that every Wednesday afternoon we go swimming at Renfrew Victory Baths. We have been put into 3 different groups and have been learning to do front crawl and back stroke with and without a float. The coaches are great and we can't wait to see what else we are going to learn. During P.E we have been learning skills for basketball. We have learned skills such as chest pass, shoulder pass, bounce pass and how to defend and shoot. We are excited about playing team games and using all of these skills.
One of our favourite activities in class so far has been creating our dog/wolf and fox pictures during Art. We used chalk and charcoal to create the effect of texture by highlighting light and dark areas. Our pictures look fantastic!

Collaborative Learning- we're really good at it!

<img style="display:block; When we began the topic we never imagined how different our class would look. From falling palm trees to sinking beach huts, this topic has provided primary six with challenges, but also a lot of fun.

Thank you to all those who attended our open evening. We hope that you enjoyed all the activities and chocolate on offer. Pictures from the evening will be posted here soon.

We would also like to thank Mrs Gray for all her contributions to our topic. Also to Mr Rankin and Mrs Ward for helping to make our classroom beautiful. A special thanks goes to Darren McNish for directing our wonderful play (apolopgies for Miss McCurdy's bad acting :) ). Finally we would like to extend our gratitude to our families and friends for supporting us in our learning.

After all this time in paradise, we're exhausted. Thank goodness Easter break is around the corner.

Before then we'll be enjoying bowling, a visit to the church and an Easter Egg Hunt.

Term 3

Well it's been a busy start to Term 3 in primary 6, with a Burns' assembly and ceilidh to organise. We practiced for weeks and we think we did alright on the night! We received thank you cards from our guests and we hope you all had an enjoyable time.

Now we've moved onto secret topic and we are having a great time learning all about the... Even though we can't give anything away, we can tell you that we've been learning in all sorts of ways: carrying out group investigations, completing challenges and using our individual creativity to transform our class. Miss McCurdy is very proud of how hard we have been working!

This month is physical month and the whole school have been participating. Mrs Gray has treated us all to an aerobics a session outdoors. Even though it's cold, we love keeping fit in primary 6. We are also completing the water challenge and have been drinking a bottle of water everyday. Our thinking is much fresher. Healthy snacks is now what we are striving for.

We'll keep you posted on our progress,

Primary 6

Term 2

Thank you for the great response to Operation Smile, the children have been bringing in their t-shirts over the past couple of weeks. Although some of us were a little nervous at first, the supportive and experienced coaches provided us with confidence and enabled us to improve our technique.

We learned about the famous architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh during term 1. We studied his life, designed new classrooms and explored famous buildings. The art of Mackintosh inspired our creativity and we designed school logos, produced Scotland Street school pictures and even used cotton buds to paint with. We have enjoyed this topic and our work is on display in and around primary 6.

At maths time primary 6 have been using the Nintendo DS to improved their mental agility. The children find this both challenging and fun. Even though some of us still have a brain age of 30, we are confident that we will all reach 20 by the end of term.

Operation Smile

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 48px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0Vcj9FrsYXE/StyIOZ8ayGI/AAAAAAAAAPI/hDp9uaqKAbM/s200/blue-peter.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394336234746857570" />
This week Primary 6 will embark on Operation Smile. Take a look at the website for more details.

Thanks for your support.

Kirky's Got Talent

Recently, the whole school participated in a talent show. Anyone who wanted to enter had to audition as each class was only entering one act. In Primary 6 we had many great, talented acts who auditioned. Unfortunately Mrs Hutchison could only choose one act - it was a very tough decision. The successful group were called "The Low Riders". This consisted of Dylan, James, Andrew, Daniel and Thomas. We wanted it to be a big surprise for our families and invited guests so we did not say too much about it during the topic.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BsKKtla-YGs/Scz0KkxNH8I/AAAAAAAAABI/vfRw0fM1oVU/s320/DSCF0838.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317893722523639746" />

The topic Primary 6 have been working on is World War 2 - The Home Front. We started by learning about how the War actually started, and began to think about areas of the topic that interested us to be our "Big Questions" for group research. We chose Evacuation, The Homefront, The Blitz and Hitler, Germany and the Nazis. After a few weeks of research we gave group presentations and created our own display.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BsKKtla-YGs/Scz1NSs6AlI/AAAAAAAAABY/rNl5B0pcEvM/s320/DSCF0644.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317894868725006930" />

During this time we were also working on transforming our classroom. We started by making a "Blitz" wall, then we had an Evacuation scene - a steam train at a station platform with our photos in the carriage windows, we moved on to the kitchen (we blacked out our windows and displayed some work here), then our 1940's living room where we had to design and make appropriate wallpaper. We also used technology skills to create 3D objects to display in our living room and kitchen.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BsKKtla-YGs/Scz2QPun87I/AAAAAAAAABg/RYyN-klea34/s320/DSCF0215.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317896018978141106" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BsKKtla-YGs/Sczy8r-L58I/AAAAAAAAABA/7n6FAUL3EVw/s320/DSCF0288.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317892384427337666" />

Throughout the topic we had several core writing tasks to do. These were - Declaration of War (newspaper report), and Evacuation sense poem, an Evacuee's letter home, an annotated diagram of an Anderson shelter, an imaginative story called Air Raid! and a war-time diary entry. All of our writing had to be of a high standard.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BsKKtla-YGs/Scz2fR_eNZI/AAAAAAAAABo/nc7g3ZbrvGQ/s320/DSCF0204.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317896277283714450" />

We were also given lots of challenges, task and research to do at home. These included finding a suitable evacuee costume to wear for our open evening, creating a 3D 1940's room and making a ration book.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BsKKtla-YGs/Scz0tazFd_I/AAAAAAAAABQ/x-aznKRu34Y/s320/DSCF0755.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317894321142593522" />

Our open afternoon and evening were very successful and enjoyed by all! All pupils (and the teachers!) dressed in 1940s style clothing. These consisted of a play and performance in the hall - including some war-time songs- then a tour of our classrooms. We had made up several activities for our guests to do in the class and we showed off all of our tremendous work!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BsKKtla-YGs/Scz37T_1MtI/AAAAAAAAABw/mi2Yr6zjX_g/s320/DSCF0860.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317897858370056914" />

We have thoroughly enjoyed our Joyning the Learning topic and are very proud of everything we have achieved.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BsKKtla-YGs/Scz41xl7xNI/AAAAAAAAAB4/ip9aEb-YihA/s320/DSCF0851.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317898862746911954" />

Robert Burns

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BsKKtla-YGs/SYsGKliUEdI/AAAAAAAAAAo/Owk--ODftRw/s320/Burns1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299336165476012498" />

Primary 6 have been very busy during the first few weeks of this term as their enterprise topic was to organise the Burns Assembly and Burns Supper.

Both of these events were very successful and took place on Friday 23rd January. However, the children had started to plan and prepare for them a long time before this! In October, we began our topic “Go For Enterprise” which involved the class setting up their own company which would then lead on to planning the Burns Supper. The company name chosen by the children was “High Road Haggis”. They designed a logo for the company and then set up several different departments.

In order to get a job in the company, the children had to apply for a job in one of these departments and were then interviewed. They each received a letter to tell them if whether or not they had been successful.

Once they had their roles, the children proved themselves to be effective contributors as they started to plan the Burns Supper. As our PTA was arranging the Ceilidh part of the night, we could concentrate on the entertainment and the formal parts of the Supper. The children also had to advertise the event as tickets would be on sale to the whole school, not just Primary 6.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BsKKtla-YGs/SYsGkTNm-II/AAAAAAAAAAw/iQ06-zDYgOk/s320/Burns2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299336607233931394" />
After Christmas, the focus was on Robert Burns himself. From this, the children started preparing their class assembly, as well as the Immortal Memory and the entertainment for the Burns Supper. Once all this was planned, the children spent a lot of time rehearsing as there was a lot to learn! Primary 6 learned several Scottish songs and poems, some of which were sung and recited on the day.
The assembly and the Burns Supper went very well and were great fun! The children showed that they are both successful learners and confident individuals as they confidently played their part in the evening’s events. Everyone in the class did their very best and all of our guests had a fabulous time too!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BsKKtla-YGs/SYsGtP6R1DI/AAAAAAAAAA4/C7NprSWXrN4/s320/Burns3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299336760966370354" />
